Apple has recently launched Ping, a social network that has prime focus on music. The iTunes Ping is not an independent platform, rather it comes as an integrated plug-in to iTunes 10. The features of iTunes Ping are limited but impressive. The privacy settings of Ping are simple to configure and implement.

The iTunes Ping application requires activation from the user before it can be put to use. Ping is deactivated by default in the iTunes sub-menu. When the user clicks on this opt-in feature, he or she is taken too an account activation or profile creation page. The user is required to provide some basic information in order for the profile to be created. The name and gender are the only mandatory fields while creating a profile.

There are other sections in the profile creation page as well such as address, photo or bio. However, these fields are optional and may be left blank by the user. Among other features of the iTunes Ping application, the follow option has been widely discussed by users. Ping requires authentication from the user before other users can actually follow him. When you let someone follow you, your e-mail address is also displayed to them. This plants a seed of doubt about the privacy settings of Ping.

However, the user is allowed enough security and control over the follow option. You may restrict the displaying of your e-mail address to only those whom you trust. As an added feature, the user may turn on what Ping calls a no-follow mode. With this, no one gets to follow you though you still may follow someone if you want. This is a testament to the security assurance by the Privacy Settings of Ping.
