The Military Leadership Diversity Commission says it's time that women be put in the battlefield.
On Monday, in a recommendation delivered to the Pentagon, the commission strongly recommended the modification of policies that exclude women from combat and other "barriers and inconsistencies." They adviced that these policies need to be eliminated to level the field of play so that women can advance in the military.
Lester Lyles, Commission leader and retired Air Force Gen. said, "We know that (the exclusion) hinders women from promotion. We want to take away all the hindrances and cultural biases." Lyle added that today's conflicts are totally different from the Cold War era as women now "serve and lead military security, military police units, air defense units, intelligence units."
If the Defense Department agrees to modify the policy, it would repeal a 1994 combat exclusion policy that was put into place before women were assigned to combat units.
