Mariner Energy has reported that fire on Vermilion Bay Oil Rig has been containted but but has not been extinguished fully yet. Houston-based company Mariner Energy Inc. has deployed three firefighting vessels to the oil rig explosion site and one already was in place fighting the fire.
Mariner said in a statement that the platform had been producing both oil and natural gas. During the last week of August, the Vermilion produced an average of 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas per day and 1,400 barrels of oil.
The Vermilion platform, some 80 miles south of Louisiana's Vermilion Bay, is a permanent rig that federal records show operates in 340 feet of water. It was not immediately clear what triggered the explosion.
Mariner, a relatively small independent oil and gas company, compared with BP, Shell and other oil giants operating in the Gulf. Mariner shares dropped on the news, shedding more than 2 percent.
