Levi Johnston, Sarah Palin’s former son-in-law, has issued an apology to the Palin family in People magazine for the statements he made about the family last year. He admitted telling lies about Sarah Palin and her family after splitting with the former Alaska governor's daughter last year.

After a year of public mud slinging at the Palin family, Levi Johnston has apologized to the former Alaska governor and her family admitting his public lies about the family. Johnston is the father of Sarah Palin’s grandson. He split with Sarah Palin’s daughter last year and since then had engaged in a slew of public defamatory remarks about the Palin family.

The 20-year-old tells People magazine Tuesday that he "publicly said things that were not completely true," and "I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize" for his "youthful indiscretion." It is still not clear as to which statements Johnston was referring to and could not be clarified as Johnston was not immediately reachable for comment. Johnston told People magazine that he was unhappy and angry at his break up with his former fiancé 19-year-old Bristol Palin, after their son's birth in December 2008.

"Part of co-parenting is creating healthy and honest relationships between the parents," he said. "Tripp one day needs to know the truth and needs to know that even if a mistake is made the honorable thing to do is to own up to it." Johnston admitted that he has privately offered his apologies to Sarah Palin and her husband Todd.

Sarah Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, said she was unreachable for comment because she was in Bristol Bay involved in her family's commercial fishing business. Johnston’s representatives too could not be reached for comment.

Sarah Palin is a former Alaska Governor and was the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee.
