Motorola Droid X is on its way to become season's most popular smartphone, as all the Verizon stores have exhausted the stocks till August 4 or even later and the pre-order backlog continues. Motorola needs to be careful here as the backlog might turn into a lost opportunity for the smartphone maker.  According to reports, the customers who visited stores since last week have been asked to place pre-orders or order via phone delivery.

However, the supplies have remained scarce, whereas the demand for the handset has continued to remain strong. It's reported that even online stores had also been out of stock since July 25. Verizon’s website, meanwhile, has announced shipment dates as early as August 4, confirming the failure to meet the supplies. Reports said that most of the retail outlets have promised customers to deliver smartphone by August 5 for people who placed orders July 23.

The apparent scarcity of the Android handset has fueled speculations that Verizon Droid X is set to surpass Apple's iPhone 4, which has recently come under scanner over its antenna/network issues. The massive popularity indicates that Motorola has now started to gain a major stake in the market since it an open source platform.

Droid X's comparison with iPhone 4 is very obvious, as both smartphones were pitched as the best smartphones so far. Well both handsets are loaded with high-end features ranging from crystal clear display to a wide gamut of apps. With Apple expanding its iPhone territory to cash in on the global market, it will really interesting see if Droid X follows a similar path and reaches out to European and perhaps Asian markets.

With the evident scarcity of Motorola’s newest Droid X unit, the news seems to have been proving how well Motorola has done in the market since it embraced an open source platform. Of course the phone is ingeniously created to battle the iPhone 4.0 but it has demonstrated more advantages when it houses promising open source features that entice a lot of gadget buyers today.
