At least 51 people were killed and over 100 others seriously injured in a devastating suicide bomb attack outside an Army recruitment center in Iraq’s capital Baghdad, said Iraqi officials. An Interior Ministry official told reporters that the suicide bomber attacked Army recruits on Tuesday.

The attack has been branded as the deadliest incident of violence in the country since the commencement of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan last week.

The blast at the former Defence Ministry which was active under Saddam Hussein regime comes in backdrop of rising security concerns as the US braces up to pull out its last of its combat troops from the war-ravaged country by the end of this month.

At least 50,000 US troops however will continue to stay in Iraq to serve as a transitional force. US President Barack Obama recently announced to withdraw troops from Iraq and shift full focus back on Afghanistan. He also set a deadline of withdrawing all US troops from Iraq by the end of next year.

The Iraq invasion has yielded little success to the US, which is struggling in Afghanistan as well. The US failed to restore peace in Iraq even after execution of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. The international community refrained from fully backing the US mission in Iraq as no weapons of mass destruction were found from the country.

This was one of the logic given behind the deadly Iraq invasion. On the other hand, the US has failed to achieve much success in Afghanistan, where Taliban have once again gained dominance.
