American President Barack Obama is a Muslim,so is the false belief of nearly 18% of America's population, as revealed by a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center. Every five in one people of the American population believes he is not a Christian by faith, as he claims to be.
Rumors in earlier years, had also falsely blamed Senator Obama to be hiding his religious identity, and giving a false picture of his being a Christian. But the poll saw a considerable increase in the percentage of the people who believe the rumor to be true, as compared to the earlier years.
According to the survey, when compared to the last year's statistics, there is an 11% rise in the percentage of the people who incorrectly think Obama is a Muslim, a 34% downfall in those who rightly believe the President to be a Christian, and an 11% rise in those who are not sure about his religious identity.
The President recently gave an affirmative statement about the construction of a Mosque near Ground Zero, with 70% of Americans against the venture and 29% for it. According to the poll, conducted by the Times Magazine, after the President's affirmation for the ground zero venture, the number of people believing him to be a Muslim increased to 24%, the number of those believing him to be a Christian to 47% and 24% people either refused to comment or said that they were unsure of his religious background.
The latest poll results could be a result of an attack by Obama's opponents, claim the Pew survey holders, as Republicans like Sarah Palin and Peter King criticized the President's giving support to the ground zero venture.
Obama's being a Muslim is a view more popular with the Republican and Independent sections of the American society, with 34% of Republicans and 18% of the Independents believing the President to be a Muslim.
